Saturday papers ask where the President is; he is, again, at his golf course.

CNN ran a story Saturday morning with the headline Where is Donald Trump today. The answer, per the photograph, was at the Trump National Golf Club Washington, D.C. — the one in Sterling, Virginia. He arrived in the morning. The Beast was in the parking lot. The press lid was called for the day before noon.

This was, per the count maintained by every news outlet that maintains a count, the tenth golf trip of August. The tenth. In a thirty-one-day month. Almost one in three days. The President has made 88 trips to a golf course this calendar year, and is, per IBTimes, on track to exceed the entire eight-year golf record of his predecessor — the predecessor he spent eight years criticizing for golfing too much.

Hon. Look. I do not begrudge a man some time on a Saturday. I have gotten off a double shift and gone straight to the back patio with a Shiner Bock and not surfaced again until the sun was down. Rest is rest. Time off is time off.

But the job of the presidency is, you know, the presidency. The job description includes meetings, briefings, signing things, reading the cable traffic, hosting heads of state, and, on a bad week, being findable in case something blows up at three in the morning in Asia. The job comes with a number of perks. One of the perks is not “and you may also play golf one in three days while news outlets run open-ended speculation about whether you are alive.”

The week prior, multiple corners of the internet were spinning out theories about a bruised hand and what it might mean. The press shop did not address it until Tuesday. The country, in the meantime, was operating on rumors about a man whose physical condition is, technically, a national security matter.

You ever notice how the same people who screamed about the previous President’s energy levels seem awfully relaxed about this one’s tee time.

Funny how that works.
