In 2023, after a multi-year basing study conducted by the Department of the Air Force, the headquarters of United States Space Command was assigned to Peterson Space Force Base in Colorado Springs. The study evaluated several candidate locations against criteria including readiness, cost, and infrastructure. Huntsville, Alabama, was a candidate. Huntsville did not win on the criteria. The Government Accountability Office subsequently reviewed the process. The GAO found the criteria to be reasonable and the conclusion to be supported.
On Tuesday, September 2, 2025, the President announced from the Oval Office that the headquarters would be relocated to Huntsville. Members of the Alabama congressional delegation were in attendance. The President said the move had to do with what he called “MAGA country” and the political composition of the state of Colorado. The basing study was not mentioned.
The relocation will, by Air Force estimate, take years. Personnel, families, classified facilities, secure communications infrastructure, and the surrounding industrial supply chain will all need to be unwound from one Western city and re-rooted in one Southern city. The cost will be substantial. The Air Force has not yet produced a number.
The structural matter is not whether Huntsville is a fine city. The structural matter is that there is, in the executive branch, a process for deciding where a four-star unified command is headquartered. The process exists because relocating a unified command is expensive, disruptive to readiness, and consequential for the families of people who serve. The process produced an answer in 2023. The answer was Colorado. The answer remains, on the record, Colorado.
The Oval Office announcement on Tuesday did not produce a new study, a new finding, or a new analysis. It produced a new state.
A serious country lets the basing study mean something, because the basing study is the country’s way of telling itself the truth about its own readiness. When the study is for show and the answer is the answer the President wanted on Tuesday, the study is no longer a study. It is a piece of paper.
Calmly documenting the decline.
The breakdown.
