Saturday morning, the President of the United States went on his social network and posted a movie poster. The movie was Apocalypse Now, the 1979 Francis Ford Coppola film about the American military experience in Vietnam. The poster had been Photoshopped. The President’s own face was on it. He was wearing a military uniform he has not worn. The skyline behind him was on fire. The skyline was Chicago. The caption was Chipocalypse Now. Underneath, in his own words: Chicago is about to find out why it’s called the Department of War.

Hon. Look. Apocalypse Now is not a triumph movie. It is a movie about Marlon Brando in the jungle losing his mind. The whole point of the movie, when it came out, was that the American mission was unwinnable, the war was a mistake, and the Army was, by the end of it, hauling its own colonel out of the dark in a body bag.

You do not put your face on the Apocalypse Now poster as a flex. That is the cautionary poster. That is the poster on the wall in the lieutenant’s office that reminds him not to march into the swamp.

The other matter. Chicago, like DC, has the lowest violent crime rate in thirty years. Not the highest. The lowest. The Justice Department’s own data. The reason this is a meme on a Saturday morning instead of a policy paper is because the policy paper would have to start with crime is down, here is why we are going in anyway, and that paper would not write itself.

The mayor of Chicago responded by sundown. He used the word authoritarianism. The President posted again that night. He did not take the meme down.

You ever notice how the people who say they want law and order keep posting the war movie.

Funny how that works.
