The President of the United States is, among many other things, the convener of a Gaza ceasefire negotiation that, on the previous Tuesday, had survived an Israeli airstrike on the city in which it was being held. The negotiation continued. The Hamas figures who survived the Doha strike returned to the channel. The Qatari foreign ministry continued to host. The senior negotiator on the American side was, by virtue of his office, the President himself.
On Sunday afternoon, the President, departing Morristown for Washington, posted to Truth Social. The post was prompted, he said, by a news report. The report alleged that Hamas had moved hostages above ground in Gaza City and was using them as human shields against an anticipated Israeli ground operation. The report was, at the time of his post, single-sourced.
The post read, in part: a human atrocity, the likes of which few people have ever seen before. It went on, in capital letters: ALL BETS ARE OFF. It concluded: RELEASE ALL HOSTAGES NOW.
The structural matter is the language. All bets are off is the language of a sportsbook. The phrasing implies a wager has been called, the conditions of the wager have been violated, and the parties to the wager are, with this announcement, dissolving the contract. The contract here is, by its formal name, the ceasefire negotiation the President of the United States has been personally championing for six months.
By Monday, the press secretary clarified that the bets in question were not the ceasefire itself, that the negotiations would continue, that the President had spoken to Prime Minister Netanyahu, that the Israeli operation was in any case proceeding on its own timetable, and that the Sunday post was, as is often the case, the President speaking directly to the public.
The press shop’s clarification did not say what the bets were. The press shop’s clarification did not address what the off-position of the bets meant for the underlying ceasefire. The press shop’s clarification did not address the wager metaphor. The press shop’s clarification, in other words, took the form of a paragraph that contains every word except the words required.
A serious country’s senior diplomat does not announce the dissolution of his own ceasefire negotiation in the language of a sportsbook on a Sunday afternoon, on a personal phone, on the runway in Morristown. A serious country has a diplomatic cable for that. The cable is not in capital letters.
Calmly documenting the decline.
