Hon. The Attorney General of the State of New York is the woman who, last year, won a four-hundred-and-fifty-million-dollar civil fraud judgment against the President for inflating the value of his properties. Her name is Letitia James. She campaigned on investigating him. She investigated him. She won.

On Thursday a federal grand jury in the Eastern District of Virginia indicted her on one count of bank fraud and one count of false statement to a financial institution. The charge concerns a house she bought in Norfolk in 2020 with a mortgage that classified the property as a second home, which she then rented out as a long-term investment. That is a real thing some people get in trouble for. It is also, hon, the kind of paperwork issue that career prosecutors are usually allowed to look at, decide there isn’t a case, and move on.

That happened. The career prosecutor for the Eastern District of Virginia, a Republican, looked at the file and concluded there was not enough evidence to bring charges. He was then forced out of his job. His replacement is a woman named Lindsey Halligan. Her professional background, before the President named her U.S. attorney, was as a property insurance lawyer in Florida. She had never prosecuted a federal case. She walked into the grand jury room and got the indictment.

Hon. Last month she got the indictment of the former FBI director the same way.

Now. I have been a waitress for thirty years. I have watched men try to settle scores from the booth. I know what a score-settling looks like. The thing about settling scores is that you cannot settle them quietly. You have to make sure the other party knows who is doing the settling. You have to put your name on it. That is the whole point.

The President spent September writing posts on his social network demanding the prosecution of his “enemies.” Letitia James was on the list by name. The Attorney General of the United States, who reports to the President, sat for the indictments. The career prosecutor who said no is gone. The insurance lawyer who said yes has the job.

The receipt is filed in the Eastern District of Virginia.

You ever notice how the people who used to talk about the “weaponization” of the Justice Department got real quiet around October.

That ought to concern you.
