Hon. Tuesday. The President of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, sat across from the President of the United States in the Oval Office for two hours behind closed doors. Two hours. Drug trafficking, Venezuela, the works. Came out smiling. The President called him terrific. Petro called the meeting a great honor. Inscribed copy of The Art of the Deal changed hands. Photograph signed Gustavo, a great honor, I love Colombia. All very warm.

And then they handed Petro a red MAGA hat.

A MAGA hat, hon. To the visiting president of Colombia. This is now the White House gift shop, apparently. Forty years ago a head of state used to walk out of the Oval with a medallion, maybe a signed photograph, maybe a slim book of state. Now they hand you the campaign merchandise the host has been selling since 2015. Forty dollars at the rally. You take it home and you think, what.

What Petro did was the funniest thing. He took out a pen. And he edited the hat. He crossed out part of the slogan and rewrote it to say Make the Americas Great Again. Plural Americas. Because, you see, South America is also the Americas. And Colombia is in South America. And the slogan, as printed, omitted most of his hemisphere.

He posted the photo himself. Of his own edits. On his own account. Made the joke himself.

That is foreign policy, hon. That is a foreign head of state using a White House gift, in real time, to make a grammar point about the cultural assumptions of the host country. And the host country smiled and said, I love Colombia.

I am not saying it is bad diplomacy. The meeting was apparently fine. The drugs got discussed, the Venezuela question got discussed, both presidents went home with their faces in the right shape. Fine.

But somebody gave somebody a campaign hat as a state gift and got it handed back with edits. And nobody at the White House looks like they noticed that part.

Funny how that works.
