Hon. The same morning the President hosted the White House Easter Egg Roll, with the First Lady and a crowd of children and a person in a bunny suit on the South Lawn, the President posted on social media that Tuesday will be Power Plant Day, and Bridge Day, all wrapped up in one, in Iran.

Both events happened on the same Monday. Both events were on the same lawn. The bunny stood next to a man telling reporters his next move would be to bomb every bridge and power plant in a country of ninety million people if the Strait of Hormuz did not open by Tuesday night.

I have worked diners during family reunions where the cousin who is fine announces, in front of the kids, what he plans to do to a man who cut him off in traffic. The kids look at the cousin, then at their parents. The parents start cleaning up the plates. The cousin keeps going. There is no one in the booth with the authority to say not at the table.

This is what the morning looked like. Bunny on one shoulder. Bridge Day on the other. Reporters asking about the coming strikes. A child in face paint trying to roll an egg with a wooden spoon. The President, on cue, riffing about a captured airman, the Iranian regime, the Strait of Hormuz, and a fifty-million-egg headline number that nobody has been allowed to count.

There is a school of public communication that says the President of the United States, on the South Lawn, on the day of the Easter Egg Roll, with the bunny in frame, ought to say Happy Easter and step away from the microphone. That school does not run this White House.

Buddy. We have lived through a lot of Mondays. We have not lived through one where the South Lawn was simultaneously a children’s event and a war room.

Funny how that works.
