President extends the Iran ceasefire, citing Iran's 'seriously fractured' government.

Hon. The President extended the ceasefire. He extended it until the Iranian government, which he describes as seriously fractured, submits a unified proposal on which to negotiate.

A fractured government cannot, by definition, submit a unified proposal. That is what fractured means. The same statement that names the precondition also names the reason the precondition will not be met.

This is the part the wires reported in calm sentences and the part the second cup of coffee at the diner cannot abide. The condition is the trap. The trap is the policy. The policy is to keep the squeeze on while telling the country the war is, technically, paused.

The blockade of Iranian ports continues. The Strait of Hormuz remains the original red line. Gas, at the pump, this week, is still hovering at the four-dollar mark in most of West Texas, and a little above it in the cities. The grocery aisle, which is the only honest forecaster, has not received the news that the ceasefire was extended. The grocery aisle has been receiving a different memo, in the price of orange juice and the price of bread.

There is a way, hon, to read this generously. You can say the President is buying time for negotiations. You can say a fractured government can, in fact, eventually unify enough to pass a single negotiating position. You can say the alternative, which is to resume strikes, is worse. All three of those readings are available to a thoughtful person.

There is also a way to read this less generously. You can say the President has, for forty days, been running a war whose objectives shift with the news cycle, whose conditions cannot be met by design, and whose costs have been steadily transferred from the Pentagon’s printed budget to the country’s grocery bill.

Either way, hon, you are paying for it.
