The first post arrived at 11:03 p.m. Eastern, on a Friday, from the President of the United States. It was an AI-generated image of the President, in swim trunks, on a gold inflatable chair, in the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. Beside him, in similar poses, were the Vice President and the Secretary of State. The composition is the kind of thing a moderately bored teenager produces in fifteen seconds with a free generator.
The eleventh post arrived at 11:45 p.m. The full sequence ran forty-two minutes.
In between, the President posted his face superimposed on Mount Rushmore. He posted his face on a Wild card from the deck Uno, captioned in his own preferred format: I HAVE ALL THE CARDS. He posted an altered image of a sitting member of Congress holding a baseball bat, an image which the member had, in fact, posted of himself a year earlier. He posted gold-toned illustrations. He posted his wife. He posted King Charles III.
The simplest fact about this sequence, the one that should not require restatement, is that it is the President of the United States, alone, on a Friday night, after eleven, generating cartoon images of himself and posting them.
There is no policy in the eleven posts. There is no statement of national interest. There is no message to a foreign capital, no signal to the markets, no comfort to the country. There is a man in a bedroom with a phone.
You can argue this is harmless. A great many things are. The question is not whether the eleven posts caused harm. The question is what the chief executive of a working government is supposed to be doing at 11:30 on a Friday night, and whether forty-two consecutive minutes of self-portraiture is, by any prior standard, what we used to call a presidency.
The wires picked it up before sunrise. The morning shows ran the Reflecting Pool image as B-roll. By Saturday afternoon, it was the only piece of news from the night before.
Calmly documenting the decline.
The breakdown.

- Self-awareness Eleven posts. After eleven. On a Friday. From the President.2/20
- Staff containment There is no containment. The phone is the leak.3/20
- Recovery attempt None contemplated.2/15
- Public spectacle Wires, cable, and the morning shows had it by sunrise.14/20
Was this dumb enough?
